Saturday 23rd August

We meet at the airport at 07.00am for our Ryanair flight departing at 09.00am and arriving at Krakow Airport in Poland at 11.35am.  From here we depart by private coach to Hotel Maximum 3*** in the centre of Krakow.  Check into rooms and later on in the afternoon we will have a walking tour, accompanied by an English-speaking guide, around the most interesting places of the city, once the capital city of Poland.  The first recorded history starts from the year 965.  In the 5th century, the Polish kings used to be coronated and buried in this city.  In 1987, UNESCO declared the city of Krakow as a World Heritage Site, whilst the Cultural Commission of the European Union chose it as the European Cultural City for the year 2000.  Both Copernicus and Pope John Paull II lived in this beautiful city.  We will see the Old Town, the Royal Route, the Jewish District and Wawel Royal Castle.  We will also visit the Cathedral (entrance included) and the church of St. Mary (entrance included).  Afterwards we will have some free time to roam around and have dinner (extra) in one of the many restaurants in the town square and enjoy the evening atmosphere.

Sunday 24th August

Buffet breakfast followed by a full day excursion to Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains, known as the Polish Alps.  These mountains extend along the frontier between Poland and Slovakia and are the highest amongst the Carpathian Mountains.  Zakopane is a skiing resort, as is popular with tourists all year round.  Accompanied by an English-speaking guide, we will walk along the main “Krupowski” street, full of cafes, restaurants, boutiques and horse-drawn carriages with the coachmen wearing traditional costumes.  We will also visit the modern city dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima, a present to Pope John Paul II.  We will also admire the typical wooden houses and visit a small shop/museum specializing in the art of wooden sculptures.  Then it will be time to take a funicular (included) to the summit of Gubalowka from where we can admire the beautiful view of the town.  On our way back to Krakow, we will make a stop at the Jewish Quarters of Kazimierz.  In the evening we go out to dine (extra).

Monday 25th August

After buffet breakfast, we will go on a full day excursion to Czestachowa, one of the biggest Marian pilgrimage centres.  It is estimated that every year, this place is visited by around five million pilgrims and tourists to see the Black Madonna in the Sanctuary of Jasna Gora – considered to be one of the most important monuments in Poland.  We will visit the monastery and the church built in Baroque style.  We return to our hotel and later enjoy dinner (extra) in one of the many restaurants around the hotel.

Tuesday 26th August

Buffet breakfast followed by another excursion to Lagiewniki Hill to visit the Sanctuary of the Divine Mercy, which was consecrated by Pope John Pawl II in 2001.  We will also visit the burial place of St Faustina.  Afterward we will go the Auschwitz Concentration Camp and Birkenau (entrances included), in memory of the Holocaust during World War II.  The local English-speaking guide will take us round these two Concentration Camps whilst giving us a detailed explanation.  We return to hotel and later in the evening we will enjoy another dinner (extra) in a local restaurant.

Wednesday 27th August

Buffet breakfast and today, accompanied by a local guide, we will visit the house where Pope John Paul II lived until he was 18 years old, in the village of Wadowice (entrance to the multimedia museum included).  We will also see the Pope’s monument in front of the Gothic parish church.  We will also visit this church where the Pope was baptized, served as an altar boy and prayed each day.  Some free time for souvenir shopping.  On our way back to Krakow, we will visit the sanctuary of Our Lady of Angels, a very important place of devotion.  In the evening we go out to dine (extra).

Thursday 28th August

Our last buffet breakfast followed by check out from hotel.  We then board our coach for our final excursion to Wieliczka Salt Mines (entrance included), considered to be the most spectacular salt mines in the world.  The local guide will take us around the place whilst giving us detailed information.  We will also see various salt sculptures and small chapels.  These mines are also listed in the First World List of Cultural and Natural Heritage.  We then proceed to Krakow airport for our flight departing at 6.15pm and arriving in Malta at 8.55pm.
